So even if you first joined a group health plan after March 23, , you should ask about its grandfathered status. Your employer or your insurer must let you know if your health plan is grandfathered. View all questions about Individual Mandate. Am I required to have U. However, some employees may find the trade-off of a lower relative plan premium worth it. Some employers may be burdened by the requirement to provide employees with an annual notice of grandfathered status, Buckey noted, "although this could be combined with enrollment materials or other annual legal notices.

And it's also been shown that group coverage in aggregate has slowed its year-over-year cost increases at the same time that enrollments in grandfathered group coverage has gone from over 50 percent to about 16 percent. When employers have to administer both "ACA-approved" and grandfathered plans, he added, they "have to keep two administration approaches active, which ultimately leads to added costs.

Those who are keeping them alive aren't doing so under any supportable cost-cutting measures at this point. He added that "other, better options are available" for keeping health plan costs under control while remaining compliant with the ACA. Distinct from grandfathered plans are so-called grandmothered small group and individual market health plans that are not ACA-compliant and which employers adopted during a transition period from March 23, through the end of While there is no termination date for grandfathered status as long as plans do not make significant changes, grandmothered plans don't fall under the same open-ended exemption.

Grandmothered plans "were meant to have a short shelf-life and were required to terminate at their first renewal after the implementation of the [ACA] in ," wrote Steve Byrd, a consultant at Durham, N.

Ever since, additional extensions were given in through , in through , and in Oct. On March 25, , the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued an insurance standards bulletin to once again allow insurers, so long as states approve, to extend the life of grandmothered policies. OK My Bookmarks. If your grandfathered plan is renewing mid-year, you can opt to let it renew, or you can opt to switch to a new plan in the ACA-compliant market. Before opting to simply renew your grandfathered plan, it's wise to check to see if there are better options in the ACA-compliant market.

If you have a grandfathered plan via your employer, you can still opt to shop around, but you won't be eligible for any premium subsidies to offset the cost of a plan you buy on your own—this is as long as the employer-sponsored plan is affordable and provides minimum value.

Be sure to check if you are eligible for premium subsidies if you buy your own new plan in the health insurance exchange in your state. Subsidy eligibility extends well into the middle class, and this is especially true for and , due to the American Rescue Plan's subsidy enhancements. For those years, there's no income cap for subsidy eligibility as long as you buy a plan in the exchange. Subsidies aren't available for grandfathered plans, so switching to a new plan might result in more robust coverage with a lower net premium.

If the cap is cracked, it allows moisture to creep in, which causes the electrical spark to jump to the wrong cylinder, causing a backfire. Carbon tracking can come into play in a variety of situations, the first situation involving sparks that are generated by wires on a distributor cap, can start to hop from one wire to another very quickly and thus a carbon track is formed which is essentially a shortcut for the spark.

The second most common scenario is when spark plug wires or ignition coils are mounted directly onto the spark plug, causing the electrical spark to split paths and leaving fuel behind in the cylinder. When the next spark is generated, it strikes at the fuel left behind and rapid burn occurs, while the exhaust valve is open and you have another backfire.

If you are struggling with a car that backfires, get in contact with us , and let us help you sort the problem out once and for all. We'll look for the following troublemakers:. In newer vehicles, computerized sensors help ensure the air-fuel ratio is correct. However, if a sensor malfunctions, it can throw off the air-fuel ratio, causing sluggish or delayed combustion. If this is the case, your Check Engine light might be screaming at you.

Leaks in the exhaust system, sometimes called vacuum leaks, can sound more like a screech than a bang as excess air gets sucked in. All this extra air mixes with the fuel, creating an incorrect ratio for proper combustion. Even something as simple as a dirty air filter can potentially trigger a backfire. Since air filters allow clean air to flow into your engine, a dirty filter can inhibit the flow of air into the intake, creating a poor fuel-air ratio.

Injectors that supply too little or too much fuel to the cylinder can also create a poor fuel-air ratio.

Spark plugs that fire out of turn or not at all can also cause backfiring. Shorts in wiring, incorrect wiring, or damaged distributor caps that deliver the charge to the wrong plug at the wrong time are much more common in older vehicles. But even in newer cars and trucks, plugs can malfunction due to carbon buildup or wear out over time. In the four-steps of engine combustion, timing is everything.

If the timing is off, valves might open or close at the wrong time, and the spark might arrive early or late. Any time the fuel-air explosion is not properly compressed, ignited, and contained, a backfire can occur. Newer engines with computer-controlled timing are more reliable, and backfires are less likely.

Not all backfires occur when you start the engine. Sometimes one can happen when you shift gears. However, that loud pop that you hear when shifting is, in fact, an afterfire. Most of these occur on manual vehicles where a clutch is used to shift gears. As you press in your clutch and go from one gear to the next, fuel can continue to enter the cylinders, especially if you switch gears at higher RPMs.

Basically, when that plug sparks out of turn, it lights the fuel in the cylinder - and that pressure has to go somewhere This usually goes away once the engine warms-up. A cold engine needs more fuel to run, and a warmer engine runs more efficiently and needs less fuel, so if you are only spitting when the engine is cold, then most likely it's due to a lean condition. You could also check to make sure your choke is working. If it's stuck open when the engine is cold, then it isn't doing its job by richening-up the mixture and it could definitely cause spitting.

Spitting and coughing can also be commonly caused by the accelerator pump in the carb not squirting enough fuel before the main jets start working. If you spit the instant you blip the throttle, then it's probably the accelerator pump in the carb not working, or not squirting enough fuel, so the engine takes a gulp of air and goes lean, which causes the spit back-up through the carb.

This could mean that it's plugged up with some dirt, or a piece of something that got through your fuel filter, or it could just be out of adjustment or maybe the accelerator pump itself has just gone bad and can't squirt any fuel anymore.

That's not too uncommon if the carb is a bit old. For the best deals on your performance parts and accessories with the best service, choose where I order all of my components from

These were my most active years as a cosplayer, especially since I had both the time and money to spend. Is it still worth it? How much have I spent on costumes already throughout the years?

How much more could I have saved if I only I knew how to sew my own costumes? The better question is, how much money could I have saved if I stopped cosplaying for a while? The monetary weight of cosplaying started taking a toll on me and my beliefs.

My co-writer and colleague, Mika , had the same thoughts two years ago , trying to weigh the growing costs of this hobby versus her priorities as an independent, young adult. Priorities change, you change, life changes. However, it seems like the Kristine from ten years ago has long been gone, together with her ideals about being a cosplayer forever.

When cosplaying was just starting to become popular, it already has a bad image since it is associated with the otaku culture in Japan, a subject looked down on by the majority who are not into anime.

During the early s, I saw a lot of my friends get ridiculed and bullied during conventions especially when roaming outside the event halls where normal mall-goers hang out. Why do people cosplay? Lewd photos. Unfortunately, some will do whatever it takes to get on the model train, even if it means leaving a negative image of the cosplay community.

Of course, with the rise of cosplayer-models are actual fashion models and even booth babes infiltrating the scene. Then I calculate what materials I need and head out armed with my list and reference pictures. The costumes are worn to conventions or privately-organised photoshoots. With photoshoots we often have to find a suitable location first to capture the character in an environment that is as appropriate as possible. For instance at the Leipzig Book Fair I am doing myself and those around me a big favour by not wearing crinolines or wings.

The central focus of cosplay for me is creativity, but I also enjoy the opportunity to be really vain for once in a while. As a little girl I always wanted to be a pretty princess for carnival — as a student I fulfilled the dream every year myself with flowing ball gowns and showy wigs.

Now I can be a prince too if I feel like it! Or a super-hero! Or a secret agent! When would you get a chance to wear an empire dress or a skintight catsuit in your day-to-day life? You will be able to dress up as a character you love and meet up with other people dressed up and have fun. Besides that, you will be able to get into exciting discussions with those around you about these characters.

Cosplay is an awesome way to spice up your life and have fun with others who share similar interests. Man is a social being, and most of the things we do are because we are able to socialize. When you attend a Cosplay event, you will most likely meet thousands of people there just to socialize. You will be able to hang out with fellow nerds and discuss various topics that you would have otherwise been uncomfortable discussing. Thus, if you are looking for a new and interesting way to socialize with others, you should join cosplay events.

While many cosplayers do it for fun, there are those who make a living off it. In the world of cosplay, some celebrities take a lot of time and effort to come up with professional costumes that are truly stunning. These cosplayers are invited to conventions as cosplay models. These cosplayers have a huge following on social media, which they utilize for influencer marketing and make a living off it.

They will usually sell autographed photos of themselves. On top of that, they are usually paid for consultancy work during the creation of video games. Although monetization is great for cosplay, it can also expose cosplayers to scams. Some have been invited to foreign countries only to learn that they were being scammed.

Besides that, sometimes those who choose professional cosplay are ridiculed, and some do not take them seriously. Despite that, they have persisted, and some do make quite some good cash off their profession. If you are thinking of monetizing your cosplay, do not be dissuaded by any ridicule that you may suffer along the road.

A few weeks back, I wrote about the Hunter Boots vs. Both shoes are perfect for warm weather because they come in a plethora of colors and styles. They also both have a rubber sole and, most commonly, canvas material. So should you buy Converse or Vans?

Converse shoes have been around since and they later created sneakers using the rubber they made for their galoshes. The All Star sneakers were originally used by basketball players, but as we all know now, people wear them for every possible purpose.

Pros: Converse All Star sneakers have two basic styles, the high-top and low-top. The low-top sneakers are really cute and perfect for running errands or going from class to class. Both styles are nice as long as you stick to the classics.

Winner : Converse, but not by much. However, powerlifting is a game of inches and little details can matter. From a recreational lifting point of view, Vans and Converse are fairly neck and neck. The general Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars feature a canvas upper which is fairly durable across the board and will usually last a few months before breakdown issues are experienced.

My Converse typically lasts months before I notice any signs of upper construction breakdown. Most Vans models come with either a canvas, suede, or leather upper. My Vans last about months before the upper stretches from lifting or the stitching starts to fray.

Suggested Read: My top 5 favorite cross-training shoes for deadlifts. As for stability, I think both of these models will perform fairly equally for the general lifter. Winner : Tie. Both models have similar upper durability for recreational training and the Vans may be a more comfortable option overall. Each model has very similar core construction features and neither of these shoes is technically designed for lifting-focused wear, so in this context, their durability can be slightly skewed compared to those who wear these models on a day-to-day basis.

The most common Vans and Converse models that are worn in the gym generally feature canvas uppers. Canvas is fairly durable on a daily basis, but in the gym, it can be prone to ripping and stretching. Close Menu. RSS Feed. Submit Search. Navigate Left. Navigate Right. Share on Facebook. Although these two brands have their differences, the sneakers are often similarly styled. Most often they are paired with skinny jeans or straight-legged pants. Of course, you can style them with whichever pants you want to rock, but slim-fit pants are the most popular way to go. For an edgy, skater look, opt for Vans paired with deconstructed jeans and a graphic tee or sweatshirt. Vans are perfect for a casual vibe. If you want a dressier look, choose a pair of Converse and throw on a sundress or a nice jacket and straight pants.

This is a great way to take your casual outfit up a notch. Who wins the Vans vs Converse Battle? Ultimately, deciding on a pair of shoes can be a difficult decision as they are often a long-term purchase and can be more expensive than your usual clothing purchase. When it comes to Vans vs.

Converse, it ultimately depends on your personal style and taste. However, whether you choose Converse or Vans, you will be choosing a good quality pair of footwear. There may be areas where one wins out over the other, but they will both last a long time and keep you looking stylish while doing it.

Cocker spaniels have long ears to help them with scent. Long ears help to capture scent particles when the dog is running and hunting.

If you were to compare a working Cocker spaniel against a show Cocker spaniel, you would notice some differences in sizes and appearance, and one obvious area is that of ear size. Due to selective breeding the two types of Cockers have moved apart in terms of ability and appearance — working Cocker breeders have bred for performance, whereas show breeders have bred for looks.

One of the key parameters for show Cockers is length of ears, thus breeders for this purpose have focused on the development of dogs with long ears and other areas. If we look at a range of dog breeds that are bred for hunting or seeking out quarry then we would find that there is one distinct feature that is common among these types of dogs — long, floppy ears.

If there are more than one of these factors, infection is bound to progress fast. This is especially true if it goes unnoticed for a while. Infection in ears leads to more inflammation. In return, inflammation can feed the ear infection by providing a supportive environment for microbes in the ears! Also, ear problems will progress quite fast if ears are cleaned to manage them instead of treatment by a veterinarian.

Administration of appropriate and early treatment is key. In the adorable Cocker Spaniel breed, the ears provide the perfect environment for predisposing ear disease factors floppy ears, hairy ear canal openings. They are also prone to ear disease perpetuating factors their ear canal glands inflame easily, ear canals can get waxy. To top it off, a range of primary conditions affecting skin are common in Cocker Spaniels, as listed above and in our other blog about Cocker Spaniel skin problems.

Remember, not all Cocker Spaniels are affected by ear disease. One predisposing factor for ear problems is excessive ear cleaning. If your Cocker does not have a history of ear problems, it would be best to leave their ears alone! If ear conditions persist in dogs for more than 3 months, a mild infection becomes a chronic ear infection. Dogs with long standing, chronic ear infections need very specific and specialized therapy for a cure.

Long standing ear conditions can also lead to ruptured ear drums, middle ear infection, and ear canal masses, to name some possible negative effects of persistent ear problems. In brief, there are numerous reasons for Cockers being prone to ear problems. If there are no ear problems, these ears should be left alone like for any other dog breed. If problems do develop, it is important to treat early and correctly. Also, it is important to resolve not just the ear infection. In addition, the underlying primary cause such as allergies or thyroid conditions also need to be diagnosed and treated.

This will prevent future ear problems. Cocker Spaniels are vulnerable to many different skin problems, and thus ear problems. French Bulldog. Short-snouted and bat-eared, it's no wonder the French Bulldog qualifies to many as a cute small dog breed. Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Golden Retriever. Bernese Mountain Dog. Yorkshire Terrier. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Potential health problems. From hip problems to eye problems to metabolic diseases , English Springer Spaniels are risky in the health department.

See English Springer Health. Of particular concern is a rare neurological disorder that causes sudden flare-ups of extreme dominance or aggression. English Springer Spaniels don't like to be left alone and may become nuisance barkers if they're bored or lonely. Don't expect your English Springer Spaniel to be a good guard dog. They bark at noises and when strangers come around , but quickly settle down and want to be pet. Due to their loyal nature, they may develop a protective bark but I'm afraid they aren't an ideal guard dog as their friendly and happy personality will kick in and they are more likely to give any Burglar a big lick!

It's easy to write these hefty pups off as lazy, but English Bulldogs welcome the frequent exercise they need in order to stay trim. Great Pyrenees. French Bulldogs. Bichon Frises. Scottish Deerhound. Rage syndrome, also called Springer Rage, is a dangerous form of dominance aggression that is thought to be a form of epilepsy. English Springer Spaniels with this condition have episodes of extreme aggression, often attacking their owners.

Every dog is different, but if your springer spaniel is like most of his breed, he'll reach adulthood by 18 months. To work it into retrieving all you need to do is, as soon as your spaniel has picked up the dummy or ball , you simply give him the recall whistle and, all being well.

You take it off him and give him lots of praise. Cutting the mats out — Never cut the mats out of your dog's fur with scissors. It's very easy to catch your dogs' skin in the mats and unintentionally create a large wound on your dog.

Why aren't there a lot of big cities in Africa? All current evolution evidence points to our development on this continent, so surely it should have the highest concentration of big cities, right? As we know this is not the case. As it happens, most of the world's largest and greatest Empire's were located in Europe and Asia. Europe and Asia's shape is particularly well suited for large Empires being wider than it is tall.

When we look at some of the greatest empires in the past, for example, The Qing Empire, Mongol Empire and Roman Empire we see a roughly horizontal expansion across Eurasia and the top of Africa in the case of Rome. All well and good, but what made Europe and Asia so conducive for city building? Theories and models may suggest that the shape of land greatly affects the success of cultures and civilizations.

The width of this slab of Earth provides a lot of land that's roughly on the same latitude. This provides, more or less, the same or similar climates. If you lived on a continent, say like Africa, it is taller rather than wide. This means the climate will change more dramatically as you travel North or South compared to a longer rather than taller continent. Major early developments in human life were linked to animal husbandry and farming.

These innovations allowed us to move from a nomadic hunter-gatherer society to a settled farming lifestyle. Plants and animals that have thrived on one part of the continent are likely to do well throughout the same land mass on a similar latitude.

Even other continents with a similar climate are likely to accommodate these species. The Americas are a good example of this. Modern empires such as the British Empire were able to use European agricultural crops in their colonies. The US and Europe are, more or less, climatically identical. If you needed to expand your civilization across a great many of latitudes, you'd likely end up needing to domestic various different species rather than use the same or similar ones you already successfully have.

Once settled humans could focus on less immediate issues, like eating, to work on technological advancement for labour saving and many other aspects of modern societies. An excess of food leads to a positive feedback on population growth. This meant that towns and colonies could support ever more people. The most successful or best-placed ones could eventually become the biggest cities in the world. Water has always been one of the most important and attainable methods as per transporting heavy goods and resources over long distances.

Taking the advantage of being close to a body of water, may have just been the reason that enabled many of these cities to grow into the megacities they are today — in some cases, even socially more powerful than entire countries. Sao Paulo, Rio , and Johannesburg are some of the 32 out of largest cities in the world located in the Southern Hemisphere. An interesting thesis revolves around the fact that continents in the Northern Hemisphere have a vast east-west span, rather than a long north-south span.

That is seemingly the reason why ancient emperors such as Alexander the Great or Genghis Khan were able to advance so much, conquering new territories without changing the assets and animals that used their troops.

That might answer why the distribution of major settlements on the globe to date has remained disproportional. When Fernando Magellan embarked with his fleet around the world in , the first purpose of his odyssey was not to circumnavigate the planet, but to find the Spice Islands in South East Asia, by reaching them through a new western route. Resources have also taken central place as per city location, or at least they have been the reason for their presumably rapid growth.

In the case of boomtowns, an abrupt population and economic growths are frequently preconditioned thanks to lucrative resources such as gold, silver, gas or oil.

A recent example is Dubai, which has immensely benefited from being an administrative heart of oil resources in the Middle East, albeit not physically located near the oil. Dubai Tram is the first completely APS based tram network in the world, photo credit. In the past, Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester all make pretty good examples for boomtowns on the territory of United Kingdom, all undergoing a dramatic surge in the population at the turn of the 19th-century due to the Industrial Revolution.

In pre-industrial Britain, these towns were just relative backwaters, in contrast to then more prominent market cities such as Bristol, York, and Norwich.

These boomtowns do not directly owe their sudden growth to the discovery of local natural resources, but more to the factories that were launched there.

A great advantage, of course, was the availability of large seams of cheap coal to fuel those factories. Liverpool was the port of registry of the ill-fated ocean liner Titanic, photo credit. According to the Wendover Productions, there is a Ten Mile Rule , a building block for the spread of cities across a country or a region.

What most small towns all had in common, were everyday services such as food stores, pharmacies, banks or restaurants services that everyone would use , but not every town needed or had specialized services as provided by car mechanics or more developed hospitals. In modern days, this role of specialized services may be fulfilled by airports and universities, which makes a city spread its influence for hundreds of miles. Last but not least, mountains may be a very strong reason why some cities sprout where they sprout.

Although a double-edge, historically, mountains have been essential for the survival of some cities and even civilizations. While mountainous terrains generally slow down trade and transport activities, they still come with a natural advantage, which is reduced risk of siege in the case of invasion.

La Paz, the Bolivian seat of government thrives at an altitude of 3, m, being among the top highest large cities of the world, photo credit. Many fields of historical, geographical, and spatial research are devoted to exploring the evolution of cities, revealing a set of similarities across the globe.

In a recent video , Wendover Productions described a common set of characteristics linking some of our largest cities, six of which we have outlined below. Watch the video after the break:. If you measure the distance between two adjacent pre-industrial American towns, you will likely find it to be miles.

Before the advent of cars, people in rural settings could only walk a maximum of five miles to the nearest town in a single day for work and supplies. As a result, towns developed a five-mile sphere of influence, creating a common mile distance between each medium-sized settlement. The Ten Mile Rule is a building block for the spread of cities across a country.

While most small towns had common, everyday services such as banks, food stores, and pharmacies, not every town needed specialized facilities such as hospitals. Therefore, certain towns increased in size to accommodate more people and services within their spheres of influence. As this process continues, we eventually see the creation of large cities equipped with airports , universities , and other highly-specialized facilities, with spheres of influence stretching hundreds of miles.

Oceans have always been the most feasible, cost-effective, enduring method of transporting heavy goods over long distances.

Heavy rains that began in October caused Lake Naivasha to swell to its largest size in nearly a century, flooding the land upon which hundreds of hippos had grazed. And the number of fishermen—once in the dozens, perhaps a few hundred at most—swelled into the thousands after the global economic crisis caused by the COVID pandemic hit the region. Kenya is the fourth-largest flower exporter in the world, but when the pandemic hit, Europeans stopped buying them.

Thousands of flower workers around Lake Naivasha were let go. With few other sources of income, many turned to fishing. Naivasha has long been a place where humans and wildlife converge.

Meanwhile, hundreds, maybe thousands, of hippos bathe near the shore, pressed up against the submerged fences of the now-flooded flower farms, homes, and tourist cabins. The result is a deadly mix: humans and hippos competing over a thin strip of territory. Nature is reclaiming Naivasha, and the result has led to dangerous melees—ones that humans do not win.

Ruth Mumbi lost her husband when a hippo overturned his fishing boat four years ago. The lake has no outlet. Each year, about six feet of water evaporates from its surface into the sunny sky.

A decade ago, after a series of droughts, residents feared the lake might disappear, taking an entire ecosystem and the tourism industry down with it. The rainy seasons were also wetter than usual. More rainfall brought increased cloud cover, reducing evaporation from the lake.

Naivasha is not alone. People built houses, tourist cabins, and even greenhouses on this land, but now many of these structures are underwater.

The lakeside town of Kihoto, for example, drowned last year. Today, walls of concrete blocks jut up above the dark waters. Several miles west, the curved tops of flooded greenhouses mark where flower farms have been swallowed. If the lake keeps growing, more buildings will submerge. A trove of common carp escaped into the lake, where they ate up most the crayfish and ravished the eggs of the tilapia, black bass, and other species prized by sport fishers.

The carp multiplied, and fishing became a livelihood. When Lake Naivasha suddenly expanded in , it seemed at first like a boon to the fishing industry. Fish bred in the rich, untouched soil of newly inundated riparian land. They grew into thousands of pounds of fresh food—more fish than anyone can remember.

Now, on the southwestern shore, Karagita boat landing is overrun each morning with fishermen unloading their catches. Teenage boys are paid pennies to repair old nets that have been tangled or cut by a propeller. And each day, tourists arrive at the landing and hire boat captains to take them on hippo tours. Early one morning, a captain named Douglas Mokano puttered toward a pod of hippos. Watch: Is this hippo in Botswana grieving the loss of her baby?

Despite their girth, they manage to squeeze together so tightly that a pod of five hippos looks like a single blob of grey and pink flesh. Kenya Wildlife Service has been unable or unwilling to put a stop to the illegal fishing.

The agency did not respond to repeated requests for comment. One night when they tried to arrest a group of fishermen, the fishermen fought back. They tied up the rangers, overturned their boat, and set it on fire, stranding the rangers until they could be rescued. Scientists estimate that between 29 and 87 percent of hippo attacks are fatal. Though hippos are herbivores, when grass is hard to come by, on rare occasion s they have been known to eat other animals— even deceased hippos.

Kilo has witnessed or investigated eight attacks in which fishermen died. Attacks have become so common that he has transformed his car into a makeshift rescue vehicle, removing the back seats so victims can be loaded easily and laying down plastic to catch the blood. But Kilo is no EMT. Wabomba treats an average of one or two hippo victims each week. Hippos can trample victims or drag them. Related: Delayed treatment and antivenom shortages put tens of thousands in Africa at risk of dying from snakebites.

Wabomba estimates that 40 percent of the hippo victims he sees ultimately die. This is what we call damage-control surgery.

Driving his Land Cruiser across one of them on a recent afternoon, he stopped to watch a lone hippo resting in a shallow pool of mud. Hippos give birth underwater because it is safest there. This is of course in shallow waters. After birth, the cow and calf hippos stay in water full time for up to 14 days, without going out to graze.

A hippo secretes some natural chemicals to protect its bare skin from the tropical sun. These two secretions are of hipposudoric acid and norhipposurdic acid. Combined, these two chemicals are what is commonly referred to as blood sweat.

Besides absorbing ultraviolet light from the sun, they also inhibit bacteria - thus preventing diseases. A hippopotamus can live for 40 - 50 years. To put this in context, this is more than 4 times the average lifespan of a lion. A hippopotamus moves in water by using its feet to propel itself forward.

A hippo's body is well adapted to move in water with ease. The facial features such as the eyes and nostrils are placed on the top of the head to allow for total immersion except for the eyes and nostrils. While Hippos spend an average of 15 hours a day in the water, they do not breathe when underwater.

Hippos can hold their breath for more than 5 minutes when fully submerged. They close their nostrils when they are submerged underwater. Like with many animals in the jungle, fighting is the way to resolve issues.

A dominant male hippo in a group herd will sometimes fight with other males that are disrespecting his authority or invading his groups' territory. In most zoos around the world, hippos are fed hay, alfalfa, herbivore mixes, and some watermelon. While they do not have watermelons in the wild, zoo hippos like watermelon. In a one to one face-off, a hippo could end the lion's life in a couple of minutes.

Lions do however manage to kill a hippo by attacking it as an entire pride of several individuals. This is rare, as even the lions know the risk involved and won't go after a hippo when they can grab an easy antelope for that day's meal. Under rare circumstances, a crocodile will attack a young hippo calf. This is because hippos are stronger than crocodiles and can crush a crocodile with just one bite.

Even if a crocodile were to attack a young calf, calves are always in the company of their mothers. Hippos are aggressive and highly unpredictable. This is why they are considered Africa's most dangerous mammal. They are even more dangerous when their young calves are involved. A hippopotamus' yawn or laugh is a serious warning signal, and there is nothing cute about it - much as it might seem so. Of all the wild animals in Africa, the hippo is regarded as the most dangerous to both humans and other animals.

It is said that hippos kill more than people every year. This is an average of 3 people every two days. Most of these deaths result from invading the hippos territory or as they are trying to protect their young ones. This is because if the circumstances threatening the survival of the hippopotamus don't improve, it will become endangered. Eastern and Southern Africa countries represent a conservation stronghold for hippos.

There are only two species of the Hippopotamus. The pygmy hippopotamus and the Common hippopotamus. There were other species of the hippo in various parts of the world especially Europe but are all extinct from thousands of years ago. While many carnivores even birds can eat a hippo's meat, very few can actually kill a hippo on their own. Since a single bite from a hippo can crush a lion as if it is nothing, lions can only hunt a hippo in a bigger group.

Besides lions, the Spotted Hyena and the Nile crocodile are the other predators for hippopotamuses. Due to the size and aggression, adult hippos are rarely preyed on and the predators only target the young calves.

Hippos are regarded as vulnerable species because the threats to their survival need to be improved before hippos become endangered and head on from there to extinction. Among the Threats to the survival of hippos, are: Hunting, political unrest and war, Dams and water management, Drought, Habitat loss to agriculture and urban development.

Hippos help the environment by fertilizing the water with their dung. Their dung is full of nutrients that enable the growth of organisms that act as food for fish. On land, they help clear up vegetation around the wetlands - which allows the ecosystem to sustain all its members. Hippos are found in many African countries with a suitable wetland habitat.

Most countries below the Sahara desert have hippos. Hello, Surprise. Hello, Storm. She is most worried about Blackface, a cantankerous female guarding an 8- month-old calf that is nuzzled against her at the edge of the huddle. Blackface bares her enormous teeth, and Paolillo tenses. And Jean has been charged with murder.

In , she abandoned a career in journalism to train as a casino croupier, a trade that would allow her to travel the world. In Zimbabwe, she became a safari guide.

She married Jean, a French geologist, in , and joined him when he took a job with a mining company searching for gold. They found none. But when Karen learned that poachers were killing hippos near their base camp, she vowed to help the animals. On the other side of the stream, Tacha, a young female, edges toward Storm, an 8-year-old male that Robin tolerates as long as he remains subservient. Tacha dips her face in front of Storm and begins to blow bubbles through the water, a hippo flirtation.

Storm faces Tacha and lowers his mouth into the water, letting Tacha know that he welcomes her advances. But Blackface maneuvers her own body between the young lovers and pushes Storm, who happens to be her grandson, to the back of the huddle. As if to assert his dominance, Robin immediately mounts Tacha and mates with her. To many, the hippo is a comical creature. In the Walt Disney cartoon Fantasia , a troupe of hippo ballerinas in tiny tutus performs gravity-defying classical dance with lecherous male alligators.

Although accurate numbers are hard to come by, lore has it that hippos kill more people each year than lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes and rhinos combined. Hippo pods are led by dominant males, which can weigh 6, pounds or more. Females and most other males weigh between 3, and 4, pounds, and all live about 40 years. Bachelor males graze alone, not strong enough to defend a harem, which can include as many as 20 females. At night hippos emerge and eat from 50 to pounds of vegetation. Hippos can be testy and brutal when it comes to defending their territory and their young.

In fact, you probably remember the outcry over her decision to put Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on the cover of Vogue back in Responding to the criticism at the time, Anna said the magazine would be boring if it only covered "tasteful" people. And how they live the way they do. After recently saying that he wanted to get back together with his estranged wife, the rapper is now rumored seeing a much younger model, Vinetria.

Fans were left wondering how Kardashian West, 41, could possibly have walked through the Metropolitan Museum of Art with ease while wearing her completely covered Balenciaga look at this year's Met Gala. Now the star's mom Kris Jenner, who also attended the event with boyfriend Corey Gamble, is spilling all the details about what went down during their night at the museum.

New York Post. After filing for divorce back in February, Kardashian has maintained that she and West separated because of general differences of opinion, and that he is a great father to their four children. In the months following Kardashian's initial move to legally separate from the Donda rapper, the pair was spotted together on multiple occasions, from a couple of Malibu dinner dates to West helping Kardashian prep for her most recent gig, hosting Saturday Night Live.

Who is Vinetria? Over the weekend, Kanye West was spotted sitting courtside at a Donda Academy basketball game with his rumored new girlfriend, model Vinetria.

Sme, I have no idea why I wasted years and years in school, when I could have done the classy thing and released a sex tape. Also she both puts the line about exactly what Vogue brand is, and what is not, as well as gets so much more press by ignoring the existence of KK, its just brilliant PR.

And delicious meanfashion maveness. It was summer, something degrees, and everyone, myself included, was sweating bullets. Not her…not a drop of perspiration on her. She was totally put together and fresh as a daisy.

I was amazed, and now I really love her for not buying into the Kardashian hype. Thank you Anna! Kanye is not terrific, he is a totally overated douchetool. The problem is Kim thinks she is entitled, that alone will turn off anyone; Then add how she became known to the world…. Anna is suppose to be the standard barer for fashion and taste, and frankly by refusing to acknowledge the katdashians she is keeping her high standards in tact. I think Anna should be above this sort of pathetic behaviour.

All things kim lacks and whether you like her or not Anna does have all these traits. Yes, I agree that Anna should be above this behaviour. I have read that she is generous and charitable, so why she cannot extend the milk of human kindness to Kim K.

As for Vogue promoting unity between women… that is a beautiful sentiment that is above some individuals you will meet. I agree with you, btw. I have never bought a Vogue magazine nor am I familiar with their humanitarian goals. It seems Anna Wintour herself is concerned with being a person that helps out her fellow human beings, so hopefully that carries over into the magazine.

Then again, does anyone really want that cheaply made, crappy clothing with the kardashian name slapped on it just for sales? Seriously, why do people have to be nice to anyone? I think it has to do with their vulgarity to do whatever for cash.. Such a good description! I hate that I have a teensy eensy problem with it in that Kim is still human and until proven otherwise te legitimate partner of Kanye, so Anna should suck it up occasionally.

Now if she wanted to ban Chris Brown, that would be legit! I hate elitist behavior but in the case of the Kardashians? Someone has to draw a line in the sand and stop their encroachment into every aspect of public life. I still need Anna to explain her Sienna Miller hard on. I just saw September Issue a few weeks ago and Sienna is a pretty girl but basic to the extreme.

Her photo shoot was a joke. The years spent trying to make Sienna happen were such a colossal waste of time but wow what an education in marketing fail! So really, this is funny just because Kim cares so much. Not a fan of Kimye but Anna needs to get over herself. Vogue is just a front for ex-pat socialites from the uk.

More than anything else, this cold shoulder from Wintour will make Kanye dump Kardashian. While I lament the fact that Anna has run American Vogue into the ground, this story made my heart sing. Anna Wintour is a bitch on wheels who has single-handedly destroyed what used to be the greatest fashion magazine in the world.

She managed to sink Vogue down to the level of In Touch and Star magazine. I dont even like Anna Wintour. But Kim is totally wrong for Haute Coutur which is what Wintor champions. The whole attitude and style is tacky and totally wrong for high fashion. She never gets invited to any haute couture shows in Paris or London, the only place she is welcome is the ready to wear designers in nyc. I dont think Wintour is the only one.

Is carine roitfeld or karl lagerfeld embracing kim? Dont think so….. Yeah, Kim Kardashian is a reality tv star but she does work hard. Can you imagine having to travel all the time for appearances, modeling, etc? Kim is doing more work than most people could ever imagine doing. Anna truly is ugly on the inside and outside. Can someone please educate me on why Wintour is so important. I know she is the Editor of Vogue but apart from that why does her opinion matter?. Latest Comments.

Open top menu Advertise Writers Contact. Featured Links - The teaser trailer for Lightyear makes it look so good but how do the characters sound? According to Radar Online so, um, believe what you will Apparently, Wintour's hatred of Kim is so deep that the Editor-in-Chief wouldn't even let the starlet buy a ticket.

For charity. We're going to go out on a limb here and say that amidst planning a massive gala and leading her staff at Vogue , Anna Wintour probably didn't take a break from her schedule to ban Kim Kardashian. Still, it's interesting to note that while Kardashian has been nearly omnipresent in every other glossy publication, she has yet to appear in the pages of Vogue --and that's apparently no mistake.

On the other hand, maybe Kim K has learned a little something about the dangers of overexposure from her last relationship and decided to sit the Met Ball out. Hey, we can hope right?

There is no discussion, for example, of the powerful influence of its German neighbours on Amsterdam. Even stranger is that Shorto is effectively unable to come up with a way of integrating or even starting to explain the complex relationship with The Hague or the resentments and aspirations of other Dutch towns.

Above all, he seems to see something natural, special and organic about Amsterdam's freedom. But the city could equally be seen as just a fortunate, remote northern survivor from what had once been a dense network of Low Country "liberal" trading cities, most of which were successfully crushed and normalised by French or Spanish troops.

The ghastly fate of its southern twin Antwerp, once the biggest importer in the world — its people slaughtered, the survivors violently recatholicised or expelled and its access to the sea blocked for two centuries — could easily have been shared by Amsterdam.

On occasion, Shorto is good at wrecking his own argument for Amsterdam's baseline liberalism, by coming up with spectacular examples of city officials being no less terrible than the Spanish. In the first throes of Protestantism, the city was the site of appalling scenes, as Anabaptists had their chests cut open and hearts pulled out to be smeared, still beating, on their faces. And once the Reformation had settled in, as the people of Scotland, New England and elsewhere can testify, there is nothing inherently whatever-bag-you're-into and free-wheeling about Calvinism.

Amsterdam's espousal of reform was accompanied, before and after, with ferocious violence. In his grim, well-handled, sections on the Holocaust in Amsterdam, Shorto shows how, under acute pressure, illiberal, mercenary or vicious strains in the population could be nurtured just as much as in the rest of Occupied Europe. Amsterdam is worth buying for chapter four alone: a superb, gruesome account of the early years of the East India Company another, on reflection, not brilliantly liberal outfit.

Shorto ends by discussing multiculturalism and the new threats it presents to the city's long-cultivated civilised indifference. As his book makes clear, almost despite itself, Amsterdam's form of liberalism cannot be taken for granted, and is more fragile and less ingrained than one would like to think.

The argument within the city about its own identity has been going on for almost a millennium; it can never be assumed that the right people will win.

There is a feeling of general uncertainty. The liberal policies the Dutch are famous for have more to do with pragmatism than tolerance.

Choosing to turn a blind eye to cannabis use and decriminalising prostitution is simply sensible. In recent years there has been a backlash — particularly on drugs, with the cannabis policy being tightened. Probably not. Heijne believes that for many voters, this backlash is also pragmatic. It has become an issue that has torn the country apart.

Was the Netherlands ever as liberal as its image suggested? At least there is now an annual debate over whether or not such a character is acceptable. But still, this is an obvious racial stereotype and just three years ago more than two million people signed an online petition supporting it.

Radhakishun, one of the few mainstream commentators willing to dismiss Zwarte Piet as racist, maintains that the state of the nation in the Netherlands has never been better. Never before have so many Dutch people travelled around the world. Never before have there been so few people falling ill. The state of the nation is nearly perfect. It really seems to work. It has won investment from a range of international news organisations, including Axel Springer and The New York Times though the jury is still out on whether people will pay for its offer.

Completing the triumvirate is WeTransfer, a company that many of its users might assume is based in Silicon Valley rather than beside an Amsterdam canal. More than 70 members of staff tap away in front of large screens, gather around walls covered in Post-it notes or discuss ideas over coffee and croissants at a kitchen table in an open-plan office. That saying is about to be put to the test.

Everyone we meet believes the polder model will survive and the dykes will hold. Amsterdam has become a hub for international companies, attracted by low corporate taxes and a highly educated English-speaking population. Fashion brands, including Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, have established European or international headquarters in the Dutch capital, while a host of technology and financial-services companies have moved key staff here.

Post-Brexit, Amsterdam is trying to position itself as the city best placed to poach companies from London. It looks like your browser has JavaScript turned off. The Monocle Retail Survey is back. However, soon I started to realise that the grit-teeth smile I was so used to adopting when talking about Irish society, was beginning to reappear as I told tales of my new home.

It is difficult to hear Amsterdam being called progressive. Yes, in some respects the Netherlands is a liberal utopia when compared with Ireland — with access to legal and safe abortions since and a fair housing policy that would make young Irish couples sell their souls in a heartbeat — but the traditionalism and backwardness ingrained in Dutch society is of a different beast, one so specific to its own culture that it cannot possibly be compared.

The problem is, that when a city advertises and capitalises on its liberalism to the point where even the most stunted Karen-from-Offaly wants to kick loose and smoke a fat one in Vondelpark with her office mates, the the line between new-age and novelty starts to get blurred. Take the red light district. The street is completely central, yet is kept safely away from anything historical, traditional or landmark-worthy. The state manages to shove the tourist hub in your face and disassociate themselves from it, all at once.

It is not inherently wrong for tourists to want to indulge in the pleasures of Amsterdam. However, red-light prostitution and over a dozen seedy coffee shops clustered around one single canal does not particularly exhibit acceptance, and I learned fairly quickly that the prostitutes who rent windows in the red light district were not the empowered, sex-positive feminists I somehow expected to find.

They were predominantly women of colour, who stood on their feet for hours on end as men, almost always in large groups ranging from fifteen to late seventies gawked without paying a cent before moving on to the sex museum or the red light arcade. This is not any disrespect to the women themselves, but to the system — which is supposed to protect them by making their trade legal, but instead markets prostitution as more of a taboo than if it were still happening around shady street corners.

Instead of opening tourists eyes to the legal sex industry, they blind them, with neon lights and flashy memorabilia; almost to show that Amsterdam, too, thinks that sex culture is outlandish and a cheap gimmick. Everyday, Dutch society disassociates itself further from its main commodities, yet still perpetuates them, with blank expressions, purely for the purpose of trade and tourism.

I find it even more ironic how natives are quick to situate prostitution and marijuana as problematic and separate to Dutch culture, yet vehemently defend harmful traditions that originate from their colonial past. A hard pill to swallow, a black friend of mine living in Amsterdam tells me, when the Dutch have never issued a formal apology for their colonial history.

As socially aware Irish student, I was more than enthused to spend the year in a country whose cultural outlook is considered the antithesis of my own. Upon arriving home, it quickly sunkk in that the Dutch refusal to either dismiss or accept change, regardless of whether it is considered good or bad, indicated toward a cultural hangover that the Irish native within me recognised all too well.

Client value will be reused. Should you not use a pointer, if you would pass it to other functions, the struct itself would be copied and not reused. Note that in this simple example it doesn't really matter, as even though all methods of http. But, when I convert the same Hex value to a Byte Array on both languages, the output is different. All you're seeing is that bytes are signed in Java and unsigned in C. So if you add to any negative value in Java, you'll get the value shown in C. The actual bits in the values are the same - it's just a matter of whether the top bit is treated as a sign bit or not. EDIT: As noted in comments, if you're ever using the byte as an integer outside the debugger output, you can always use:.

Also, the leading bold 8 was implementation specific. I wrote a lot of assembly language for that machine, data acquisition stuff for plasma fusion and astronomy, using octal. I think the original motivation was to write operating systems as well as CPL compliers.

Its simplicity was that it was completely typeless, so anything was possible. Its basic problem was that it assumed that the unit of addressing was 1, which works fine on some machines but not on others.
