What makes a woman frumpy

Hi Gigi, Please consider wearing only what you want to wear and not wear it for anyone but you. A lot of women over 40 and even older! I saw a comment posted above about silver hair, and wanted to add my voice to the choir. At the time, I thought this would make my hair look much worse, and me look much older, but I was just DONE with the dye. Much to my surprise, I am now happier with my hair than I have ever been in my entire 48 years.

I almost never got compliments on my hair until I let it go silver; now, at least twice a week someone will stop me on the street or at the gym, wherever, to say how much they love it. Who knew? Also just wanted to point out that not all cultures put emphasis on accentuating busts and hiding hips. There are those of us who like our hips, and round bottoms. I prefer to accentuate, the bust, the waistline, and the hips.

We are women after all. Just had to comment. I love your website and get some great advice here. But this one left me feeling a little blue. I went and had a laser procedure done when I turned I saved up the money and really splurged and treated myself.

At the time my dentist told me that results differ depending on the individual. Some people have great results while others have no success. Well…mine did not. So much so that I went back a few days later. And the dentist agreed! He reimbursed all the money that I had paid out.

I was lucky that I had such a great dentist. But I just thought you should let your readers know that not everyone sees success with laser treatment. This push for super white teeth is a little sad. Not everyone has super white teeth even when they are young!! I think this tip is a little too rough. Thanks Josie, Yes, teeth whitening is not for everyone. We have tried several different ways including over the counter whitening strips to buying trays from the dentist that do work.

However, some people might have sensitivity issues that will prohibit the use. Keep lip color more natural. It is also great for your skin, and makes you glow. Hi Debi! I forgot to mention that I exercise on a regular basis. I power walk in summer and weight train in winter. Absolutely exercise is important.

I try to hit the gym a few nights a week, and in winter I love to do hiking. But my favorite time is summer when my husband and I hit the bike trails. I aim to not take myself too seriously! When you feel frustrated and bored with dressing, it means you probably feel that way about life too! So I try to inspire and give you the tools to lighten up and dress like you feel!

Youthful and chic!! Thank you for helping us to Fight the Frump! Yours is a noble mission…. It was not until recently that i realized that well.. I am over I think observing the younger set does help.. I must confess just yesterday I purchased a slim fitting pair of jeans and a not so long tunic..

I have been watching those young chicks.. Hi Ann, Thanks for taking the time to write in! I love that you are a real woman who is looking to keep her appearance youthful and age appropriate. You are right on track with trying out those straighter jeans and longer tunic top! However, since you are between a misses and a plus size, chances are that a slim fitting bootcut jean with a shorter fitted top, might flatter your figure as well!

There is such a fine line between keeping up with the trends and dressing to flatter your body type! If you have thin legs and hips you are lucky and will look great in the straight legged pants and even if you have some hips, the long tunic can hide that too.

But if you are busty beware.. Do you have suggestions for what to put with nice khaki pants? I like to wear them with flats. I work in an elementary school…need to be dressy casual to look professional and still be able to handle recess duty.

Hi Julia, I like to give teachers, nurses and those who have to be on their feet all day a break, when it comes to dressing FAB! Khaki pants do look best with flats or loafers.

Check out my latest post on dressing up a pair of khakis… I love it with a striped t-shirt and colorful cardigan or jacket, topped off with a casual scarf! Also, most women over 40 look best with their tops tucked out.

So a scarf can add some fun and hide the tummy area too. A great tip I heard the other day from Dr. Oz was to drink cranbery juice after meals.

It keeps your teeth from turning yellow. Does anyone know of any natural teeth whitening products. Wow Marian, that is a great question! We hope someone will come up with a solution, but we have not heard of one yet!

I was in a panic, thinking my teeth were aging , until I discovered this. Hello white teeth, again! Just wet your brush and dip it in the soda. Hi Lynne, That must be true because I have seen baking soda toothpaste in the health food store. Has anyone tried baking soda? Good tip. Thanks Lynne! I can tell when I slack off! FACT: As we age and experience childbirth, weight gain and all the rest of it, our body becomes more unique and difficult to fit.

Clothing that is made to your measurements looks and feels best. At Peggy Lutz Plus www. They wear clothes that loook great on them. I work with children so I am most comfortable in trousers and just regular tops, blouses, tees, etc. I am an excellent candidate for a makeover,I think. I need a WW shoe- and not many stores sell them.

When I discovered this, my feet were amazed. I found mail-order places like Zappos or Footsmart have many many VERY stylish shoes even for those of us with problem feet. And YES to the silver hair… I am sick of coloring. So, what are you waiting for, somethings? Put on your trendy sneaks and feel free to embrace these other fashion-forward looks. The key to keeping the look tasteful at any age, according to Sionit?

Keep your nails short and go for clean designs. Think geometrics and color blocking. The first time year-old hairdresser Diana Nielsen decided to get pink highlights, she did it to support a friend who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer.

In fact, she now believes the softer color is more flattering against aging skin. If you were scrolling through Instagram over Memorial Day weekend, you may have seen year-old Bethenny Frankel dancing in a purple bikini atop a sun lounger, blissfully oblivious to the underboob caught on-camera. It frames the face and adds interest and softness without shouting. Sadly, black only suits a small percentage of the population.

Sales people will tell you anything to make the sale! I totally second the advice about dressing up to go get your hair cut. Makes a huge difference I am so sick of old being equivalent, to bad, irrelevant, ugly, useless, helpless. Then there is all the talk about dressing to look thinner because, of course, fat is bad and unacceptable too.

Well if we eliminate all the fat women and the old women, that will be a giant step in the right direction. No one over US dress size 4 and age 30, no, better make it 25, should be allowed to take up space on the planet.

Chris — it is your choice to dress as you please. Why do people want to look better? Probably because many women feel better and more confident when they look better in their eyes. There are numerous studies that show that people who look more attractive not natural beauty are more successful at work, and get more opportunities in life.

Taking care of yourself says something about self-love and self-esteem. Wow talk about closed minded…… What a rant.. The rest of us appreciate your advice. Thank you. I really enjoyed this column. I am a career person and I like working. I intend to never retire health permitting and fully believe that a person needs to always look their best if they want to achieve success. Good luck!

I have delicate features and small bones, so need smallish jewelry. Chunky or large things are just completely out of scale on me! In so doing, I feel my best. I work hard to keep my figure and people say I look at least a decade younger than I actually am, even though I do not dress like a teenager. It saddens me to read a rant like the one above. Wear your silvers proudly, women! I think you wrote this sticker just for me! My daily challenge is to force myself to make the effort. I am a work in progress!

I think hair colour is important. If I had salt and pepper or silvery hair, I would actually wear it proudly well styled, of course. But I have a mousey, nothing-y colour that washes me out and makes me feel invisible. They also condition the hair beautifully. The other thing is eyebrows.

Over-plucked and naturally thinning eyebrows look ageing. Thicker eyebrows are in fashion now, so plucked styles can be dating. Thicker-looking brows add definition. I am That is hard to say, but yeah, I just turned I am working on reversing the 6lbs I gained by eating junk. They look sloppy to me. I find statement jewelry fun, and it can bring an outfit from ok to fabulous. I like color in spring and summer, and I live in long bias cut linen skirts, which I own in 10 colors, some with matching safari jackets.

Sexy but not slutty. Lets embrace our desire to look our best, until the end. Need assistance in purging wardrobe. We still have functions to attend and we live in the States. Any ideas?
